Birkie Week at the Moon is always full of surprises, and 2019 is no exception. Outrageous sales…check; great camaraderie…check. We’ve even got some special guests you’re gonna definitely hang out with.

First up, is Leena Peltonen, CEO and Co-Owner of Rex Ski Wax. Rex is one of the most successful wax companies in Nordic, and with her at the helm, Rex has been on the cutting edge of wax technology. Leena will be in and out Weds. through Fri. talking wax, but will be sitting down with customers on THURSDAY FROM 3-6 for more of an in-depth audience.

Trail to the Birkie Video Series, Part 1: Ashley

“Trail To The Birkie” is a 4-part series by the New Moon team that features some our favorite everyday athletes from the local community talking about their journey to compete in what some call the Greatest Show on Snow! At New Moon, we are a family of dedicated and passionate cross country skiers located in Hayward, Wisconsin, home of the Slumberland American Birkebeiner—the “Birkie.”  We began serving the Nordic skiing community back in 1976 alongside the fledgling but growing Birkie ski race. Over the years we have watched many of our customers and our families grow up with and experience Birkie Fever—many for the first time and others for more than 25 years. We  highlight a beginning Birkie skier, a mom challenging herself in the Kortelopet, an elite classic style skier, and a skier who has evolved from top age-grouper to proud father skiing with his family and the next generation of Birkie competitors.

First up is Ashley Shuman, local mom and area silent sports enthusiast. Her story will inspire you to try new things and follow your path to help others, no matter where you are in life’s journey.

Our purpose in creating this series was simple—share with everyone why we live our sport every day and love our customers. We hope you enjoy and look forward to seeing you at the shop or on the trails!

Cold-Weather Strategies Revisited

Much of the Midwest is experiencing excessively frigid temperatures this week. Up here in Hayward, it looks like we will be enjoying a balmy high of -10 with temps dipping down to a frosty low of -29 degrees overnight.

With less than ideal weather conditions looming all over the country, we thought we’d look at a couple articles we posted last year about how to protect yourself when it’s not only cold but possibly dangerous out on the trail.

First up is a review of how to keep your hands and feet warm, including traditional strategies as well as ideas on nutrition that might benefit athletes dealing with uncomfortable appendages.

This next article has tips on keeping your face, eyes, and skin protected, even including something for your furry friends.

So, whether you are skiing, snowshoeing, or taking your dog for a walk, make sure you are thinking ahead and protecting yourself. Stay safe and warm out there!

Product Spotlight – Floyd’s of Leadville

My goal in training for either skiing or biking is to reduce suffering when I participate in events. To reduce suffering after training, it’s important to have a plan for managing pain and inflammation. Eating ibuprofen like candy, as it turns out, isn’t the best game plan for your overall health. We’re happy to welcome Floyd’s of Leadville CBD line of products into the shop to help with pain, inflammation, and stress management. The Leadville, CO based company, which is home to the legendary Leadville 100 mountain bike race, was founded by former professional cyclist Floyd Landis. You can read about his journey and philosophy here .
CBD is an oil found in hemp plants. Hemp has been cultivated for practical and medicinal purposes for nearly 6000 years, with CBD being isolated and studied since the 1950s. CBD is not psychoactive (meaning it doesn’t not get you high) and Floyd’s products have been 3rd party tested for purity  so you know exactly what you’re getting. The primary benefits of CBD are: anti-inflammatory, pain management, stress and anxiety relief, and promoting restful sleep. We have been testing these products and have found them to be effective both post workout and in daily use.
We are currently stocking:
Recovery Powder – Whey protein recovery drink with CBD
Softgels – 25mg of CBD per capsule, which is generally a daily effective dose

Tincture – 600mg per bottle in a liquid solution, one full dropper = 20mg
As with any health product, if you are uncertain how this fits into your regimen, contact your doctor or health care professional.
